Known as the "Fountain of Lovers," it provides an unparalleled backdrop for one of life's most important moments: a marriage proposal. At Eidos Photography, we have had the honor of helping create and capture these magical moments for countless couples from around the world, including the beautiful story of Aaron and his fiancée.
The Beginning of a Detailed Plan
It all started with a message from Aaron. He was planning a surprise proposal during a trip to Rome to celebrate his fifth anniversary on August 22nd. The core idea was brilliant: a planned couple's photoshoot that would seamlessly transition into a complete surprise. His fiancée knew about the photoshoot in Rome, but she had no idea what was about to happen, which made the plan even more exciting!

Challenge #1: Escaping the Crowds in the Heart of Rome
The biggest challenge at an iconic landmark like the Trevi Fountain is the unimaginable crowds. Creating an intimate, personal moment amidst the hustle and bustle of hundreds of tourists is nearly impossible. Our solution was to embrace the magic of the early morning. We scheduled the photoshoot for 6:30 AM. At this hour, Rome is still peacefully waking up, giving us the exceptional opportunity to have the Trevi Fountain almost entirely to ourselves. This strategic timing not only provided a dreamy and private atmosphere for the proposal but also blessed us with the soft, golden light of dawn, making the photos even more stunning.
Challenge #2: The Art of the Perfect Surprise
The success of a surprise proposal lies in the details. We needed to craft a scenario that felt completely natural. Here are some of the obstacles we navigated and the solutions we provided to create a flawless surprise:
- Hiding the Ring Box: One of the biggest giveaways of an impending proposal is the bulge of a ring box in a pocket. It can spoil the entire secret. To solve this, we have a simple and effective protocol: the Rome photographer holds the ring. Before the shoot began, Aaron confidently handed the ring box to me. I kept it discreetly until the perfect moment, passing it to him just seconds before he dropped to one knee.
- Choreographing the Moment: We don't just wait for the "right moment"; we create it. In coordination with Aaron, we established a clear signal and scenario. Our plan was for me to ask his fiancée to turn and face the fountain for a solo portrait, admiring its magnificent details. The moment she turned her back, it gave Aaron the perfect, unseen opportunity to get into position. When I asked her to turn back around, she was met with a sight she will never forget. (Other classic and effective scenarios include pretending to tie a shoelace).
The next issue was how to present the beautiful bouquet of red roses without raising suspicion. If Aaron had been carrying a large bouquet from the start, the surprise would have been ruined. Our solution was teamwork: a colleague from Eidos Photography held the flowers nearby. We began the shoot with some standard couple poses. Then, at the pivotal moment, after Aaron was on one knee, our colleague smoothly delivered the bouquet for him to present to his new fiancée. This precise coordination ensured everything unfolded magically and without a flaw.
Beyond Photography: Capturing Memories with Video
We understood the immense value of this fleeting moment. That's why, in addition to photography, we also had a videography team on-site to capture all the emotions, the tears of joy, and the resounding "yes" on film. Having a professional video allows them to relive that beautiful memory over and over again.
